In More Detail...
Origin of Walter's Wish
In 2017 a dog named Walter was rescued from the meat trade in China. His story was one of much suffering, but also one of hope and the power of compassion. Walter found love and safety with our founder, Paula and was a beloved presence at the Rushton Rescue Charity shop.
He passed away, but the story doesn't end there!
Walter's wish was created to honour his life and continue his legacy. Having Walter with us in the shop helped us build a community that has been foundational to the formation of Walter's Wish
Fundamentally, we want to make a difference to the lives of dogs and the people who love them in the local community, and to act as a bridge between different groups who are all working to improve animal welfare.
This takes many forms and includes raising awareness via social media of issues relating to animal welfare -notably disability awareness for dogs and encouraging people to move away from animal products for both environmental and ethical reasons
We also engage with specific fundraising initiatives, explicitly collaborating with local and national organizations that align with our values, and offering a safe space for dogs and their owners (we have a little paddling pool at the front of the shop on hot days to offer a bit of relief for local dogs who pass the shop, and we keep fresh water and treats in the shop too.
Current Projects and Collaborations
We have partnered with the wonderful Pumpkin and Friends, we send monthly donations towards their larger project of creating a respite center for disabled animals
We will be hosting events towards this in the coming months. In the meantime, here is their respite go-fund-me:
Every month, we put funds aside to support small rescues - including Rushton Dog Rescue who saved Walter.
These funds raised go towards veterinary care, food, spaying and neutering, and re-homing costs.
We are also collaborating with Gloucestershire based artist Ace, of Ace Makes. We have commissioned from them a portrait of our beloved Walter. They also make jewellery, paintings, rag-rugs and key-rings that can be bought from the shop. Proceeds from Ace Makes cover veterinary costs and medication for Ace's family's elderly husky)
We look forward to opening up an online shop soon. Here you'll be able to buy our fabulous Doginist t-shirts and hoodies. Items from Ace Makes will also be available to purchase.
